Since working at home, I have really tried to pay close attention to my budget and save us money. One of our biggest downfalls is eating out, so we’ve made it a mission to try and eat at home more. I think we are deceived at how much this food really costs and really the toll it takes on our bodies. You could say that saving money has almost become an obsession of mine. I’m tired of paying money for something that I can get at a much lower price. Here are some examples of ways we are saving money as a family:
Working at Home
When I tell some people what I do, they look at me like I’m crazy. Yes, I work at home and I plan to do it until my kids reach school age. I think people are naïve to think that I do not save money while working at home. If you think about it, I am saving so much money it’s ridiculous. I do not have to spend money on eating out for lunch and I do not have to pay gas money at all. It’s nice to have that extra money to do things as a family instead of using it on travelling and feeding my mouth.
For this past year I have been involved in swapping. Swapping is where you pretty much trade clothes with other moms, but you have to pay shipping. Well, the group I helped to start kind of split and I decided it was better for me to use my time elsewhere. I have regained my passion for garage selling again. That means I am working Mon-Thurs and then on Friday the boys and I go on our garage sale adventures. My three year old loves it so much that he asks to go. It’s fun to find organizational tools, clothes, and toys that we could not really otherwise afford. Recently we bought a bunch of reading books for less than $2. As an educator that stuff is pretty close to my heart, now if someone will just tell my 3 year old to listen to me.
Every since my youngest son was born in January of 2011 I have worked from home and I have been my children’s primary caretaker. That means I wake up with them, feed them, teach them and put them to bed. I wash their laundry and I take them to do fun things. It’s been a blast being home with them and it’s encouraging to know that I am the main person influencing their lives. We recently found a sweet young girl to help us a few hours a week. It’s a nice change of scenery for me, instead of being home all week with the boys by myself. I have to mention that my husband’s schedule changes every week, so it’s important that I have a flexible schedule and working from home allows that.
Well, there you have it. This is just a few of the ways we have been saving money. I’ll be back to share a little more of our lives with you, so don’t go anywhere!
